So I have a quick question. I understand that some exotic species have different breeding periods throughout the year. I would like to harvest an Axis Doe, but I'm curious to know if there is a proper time to do so. Is there any way to know whether an Axis doe is bred or not??

Harvesting Axis Doe

Reed, axis can and do breed year 'round, though in Texas around 80% of births occur from Jan. - mid April. With a gestation of 7-8 months, and does becoming fertile again soon after giving birth, you can see that the window for harvesting an unbred doe is very slight. In a paper on axis deer by the Comanche Spring Ranch, a harvester of excess animals in the Texas Hill Country reported having never harvested an axis doe that was not pregnant, lactating or both. But to answer your question, one of the only ways to determine whether you are looking at a pregnant female would be to observe her swollen belly in the latter stages of pregnancy. Hope this helps --AAE
